Subtle Manipulation of Language by the Press

This is from the AP.

The Vatican will determine whether to defrock a priest accused of fathering a child with a high school graduate, a relationship that became public after the girl’s parents captured the couple on a video camera secretly set up in the parents’ basement.

Notice the inclusion of the phrase “high school graduate.” What has the girl’s education got to do with this article? -Nothing except as an excuse to include the words “high school.”

The eye picks up that phrase and years of reporters sensationalizing, rather than just reporting the news has trained a great many readers to take the implication that the girl was under 18 as fact. –Think Rush Limbaugh fans.

According to the DA here is no proof of that this relationship began before the young woman’s 18th birthday so there is no evidence that a crime was committed. But, hey… That isn’t exactly headline grabbing material.

We can do the innuendo, we can dance and sing
When it’s said and done, we haven’t told you a thing
We all know that crap is king, give us dirty laundry
Dirty laundry ~ Don Henley

As for the actual story:
At least he got caught with a female of legal age, unfortunately I figure this guy is as good as gone. After all, he’s not a pedophile so the church is unlikely to protect him.

I got this from RCNevada:

If you’re thinking about moving to Las Vegas… Stay Home. Our official unemployment rate is at 14.8%.

This doesn’t count the people who have dropped off the unemployment rolls –I think the rate I read was around 6000 a month. (The same number of people who were moving to Vegas a couple of years back.), or the people who worked for cash and didn’t qualify.

On top of that, Las Vegas has been rated by Forbes magazine as the county’s most stressful city.

Oh yea, mustn’t forget that while the nation wide average foreclosure rate is holding at around 2%, last year’s rate here in Las Vegas was at 12%.

On the other hand, if you have a business that doesn’t require most of your income come from local spending, Las Vegas has a lot of empty office and warehouse space and if you shop around you’ll find that houses are cheap.

–Note to self: Be nice to the boss.

The Courts Still Protect the Powerful

When Wachovia was sold to Wells Fargo there was a class action suit filed by the banks shareholders to try and recover monies they had lost. However, a settlement was reached in which the shareholders received nothing, the bank admitted no wrongdoing, the lawyers received a million-dollar payout for their work on the case and the depositions given by top executives were sealed.

Two former stockholders recently asked the court to unseal those documents, but a North Carolina judge, Albert Diaz, has ruled that while the two former Wachovia stock holders may view the depositions given by former Wachovia CEO Bob Steel and three other executives for use in their appeal, the contents may not be made public.

They are appealing the judges decision.

Coca-Cola Defends Vitaminwater by Saying You Already Know it’s Bad for You

Coca-Cola is being sued for misleading health claims about their “VitaminWater.”

First the reasonable part:
Coca-Cola is being sued by a non-profit public interest group, the Center for Science in the Public Interest, on the grounds that the company’s vitaminwater products make unwarranted health claims.

WASHINGTON—A federal judge has denied Coca-Cola’s motion to dismiss a lawsuit over what the Center for Science in the Public Interest says are deceptive and unsubstantiated claims on the company’s “vitaminwater” line of soft drinks. The company claims that vitaminwater variously reduces the risk of chronic disease, reduces the risk of eye disease, promotes healthy joints, and supports optimal immune function, and uses health buzz words such as “defense,” “rescue,” “energy,” and “endurance” on labels.

Now the WTF? part:
Coca-Cola’s defense is that “no consumer could reasonably be misled into thinking vitaminwater was a healthy beverage.”

The judge also rejected Coke’s argument that disclosing sugar content on Nutrition Facts labels eliminates the possibility that consumers may be misled into thinking the product has only water and vitamins, and little or no sugar. Gleeson cited a similar case involving deceptive fruit imagery on packages for Gerber’s Fruit Juice Snacks, which are mostly corn syrup and sugar. That court held that “reasonable consumers should [not] be expected to look beyond misleading representations on the front of the box to discover the truth from the ingredient list in small print on the side of the box.” Vitaminwater has 33 grams of sugar in each 20-ounce bottle.

Study Shows Why Men Judge Women in Miliseconds.

Here we have, for your edification and enjoyment, a classic case of — they got paid to do a study that produced nothing more than a ream or so of never to be read scientific papers and fewer trees.

www.telegraph.co.uk – Why men will judge a woman in milliseconds:
Professor Mark van Vugt and Dr Johanna van Hooff, from the University of Amsterdam, and postgraduate student Helen Crawford, from the University of Kent, were behind the study which is to be published by the Oxford Journal Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience.

Prof van Vugt said: “Men definitely have the most wandering eye but it is because they have evolved to pay attention to cues of fertility and one of those cues is facial beauty – it’s not that men are shallow.

“But we found they do make snap judgments about women, much earlier than was previously thought. They make that decision on whether a woman would be a good mating partner in milliseconds.

“This is something very ancient and a way of helping men find the best mate to produce children.

“Women were not distracted by attractive male faces because women need more proof of whether a man is a good mate.

“Women make that decision on behaviour, whether a man is trustworthy and committed. They make their decision much later than men.”

Now I wonder how much money went into the exercise in overstating the obvious.

Watch only after you’ve taken your blood pressure:

ShaddapPlease — June 16, 2010 — Area is now dangerous for American citizens due to shortage of border patrol. Arizona is asking for at least 3,000 national guard to help them secure their border along with Mexico. Obama only offer 1,200 which is not enough. Obama remain passive over this issue which is a threat to our national security – this is invasion.

Meanwhile back at the hacienda, Obama and company are suing over Arizona’s immigration law.

Coast Guard Prevents Oil Cleanup

I read about this on Outside the Beltway: — “Bureaucracy Standing In The Way Of Oil Spill Clean Up Efforts”

The governor of Louisiana sent out barges to suck up the oil and dump it into steel tanks then the bureaucratic buffoons from the Coast Guard made them stop.

According to the Coast Guard they needed to confirm that there were fire extinguishers and life jackets on board. –So? They couldn’t just board each of the vessels check that they were in compliance and let them go back to work? Oh yes. The CG also said that they were having trouble contacting the manufacturer of the barges.

The Coast Guard seems to be in competition with FEMA for the biggest cluster fuck in history. First they help BP prevent reporters from accessing things BP didn’t want the world to see, now they are preventing any unauthorized cleanup.

This is exactly like the fire marshal making you stop spraying water on a smoldering roof because your hose hasn’t been inspected.

Once again the pencil pushers have proven that paperwork is more important than life, property, or even the planet.

The United States Coast Guard: Now less popular than the IRS.
